German Bauzulieferer not winning US specifications. Munich and Bavaria.

The Bayern Mittelstand construction supplier has DIBt approval, a CE mark, and twenty years of European OEM relationships. The product goes to IBS every year. The US specification stays closed. The break is not the product. It is the document set.

Where the US specification opportunity sits for German Bauzulieferer.

Product cluster

Window and facade systems

German aluminum and PVC window system manufacturers competing in the US high-performance residential and commercial curtain wall market. US compliance runs through NFRC for thermal performance, AAMA for water and air infiltration, and structural testing under ASTM E330. A German manufacturer with European Passive House Institute (PHI) certification has relevant performance data. The US NFRC and AAMA compliance documents typically do not exist.

Product cluster

Engineered wood and timber systems

German CLT, glulam, and engineered wood products under the IBC 2021 Chapter 23 mass timber expansion. The ICC-ES evaluation route for mass timber runs through AC319 and AC465. Annual mass timber buildings constructed in the US rose from 151 in 2019 to 279 in 2023, with 1,168 projects in the US design pipeline as of December 2024 per WoodWorks and the 2024 International Mass Timber Report. German engineered wood manufacturers with European OEM track records have a viable US path that most have not mapped in ICC-ES terms.

Product cluster

Specialty hardware and fastening

German precision hardware and structural connectors for construction. The ICC-ES evaluation route runs through AC261 for screw fasteners and AC155 for shear connectors. The CSI specification section is Division 05 for structural connections or Division 06 for wood connectors. German manufacturers with ETA and CE marking for structural applications have existing test data that partially maps to the ASTM standard. The ICC-ES ESR typically has not been pursued.

Product cluster

Roofing and waterproofing systems

German roofing membrane, waterproofing, and flat-roof system manufacturers. The US compliance path runs through FM Approvals (Factory Mutual), UL Product Certification, or ASTM D6878 and ASTM D4637 for thermoplastic membrane systems. The CSI section is Division 07. German manufacturers with AbP (Allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Pruefzeugnisse) and European test data have performance evidence that maps to ASTM. The FM Approval or UL listing typically has not been pursued.

The German-American Chamber network is not the specification channel.

The AHK USA (German-American Chamber of Commerce) network is the most effective channel for German companies entering the US business community. AHK Atlanta, AHK Chicago, AHK New York, and AHK Houston run events, trade delegations, member directories, and matchmaking programs that reach US distributors, US business contacts, and US partners.

The AHK channel does not reach the architect's specification library. The specification decision for a Bavarian window system or a German structural connector is made at the architect's desk, the structural engineer's review table, or the general contractor's estimating desk. Those desks are not in the AHK member directory. They are in the spec-writer outreach channel, the AIA CES program, and the CSI chapter network.

The German construction supplier who uses AHK well and builds the specification surface in parallel covers both channels. The one who uses AHK as the only US channel covers one channel and wonders why the specification process stays closed.

Read before the first inquiry.

If the Bavarian product is approved in Germany and the US spec desk keeps closing, describe the file.

Send the DIBt and CE compliance documents, the current product page, the show follow-up sequence, and the US opportunities that did not produce a specification. Response within one business day.
